Artist Statement:
It is my hope that the work I make will enrich the daily experiences of those that own them. I find it challenging and rewarding to create functional forms balancing the functional with the aesthetic. My sculptural work is often based on function in which my creativity takes over the practicality. I enjoy making objects that are intimate, tactile, and approachable art.
Artist Bio:
The joy and desire to create has been with me from childhood when I would sit with my sister to draw laundry baskets. My passion for ceramics began at the University of Central Arkansas while pursuing ideas of another major. I went on to earn my BFA in ceramics. During that time, I interned with Roseberry-Winn Pottery in Providence, RI. After graduation, I became a studio assistant at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. I then attended the Kansas City Art Institute for post-graduate studies. While in Mo I interned with Red Star Studio and Archival Design. I returned to AR where I feel most at home and began working at the Arkansas Art Center where I am currently teaching and continue in my love of ceramics.
The Process:
I enjoy creating with clay because of the additive and subtractive qualities as well as the various stages of clay from a wet state to a vitrified surface. In every stage new problem solving arises as the chemistry, environment and timing all affect the process and creativity is challenged.
I start with creating the basic shape with the potter’s wheel. I then add, alter and carve detail into the form. The carvings are free forms inspired by nature. The piece is fired once to dry and again to add color/ glaze. I glaze to accent areas of the form and break up the space using contrast. I find enjoyment in the layers and attention to detail.
