Sculptor Tony Dow

Dow is an acclaimed sculptor whose work was chosen for an exhibition at the Louvre in Paris in 2008.
Dow works primarily with burl wood from fallen trees from the hillsides around his home in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California. The wood is carved then translated into bronze by using the lost wax process. The final pieces are unique semi-abstract sculptures evocative of the natural world and the human form. The artworks range in size from 14" to 31" in height.
Artist Statement:
I don't use models but rather create my figures from memories and experience of the human body. Working from instinct, once I decide on the theme of the piece I see the figure, or figures emerge and emphasize their relationship to each other and their world.
Biography:
Dow was born into show business. He grew up in Hollywood, California, in a household of creative people. His father, John Stevens, worked as a designer and his mother, Muriel Virginia Dow, worked as a stuntwoman who appeared in early Westerns. At an early age, he developed a love for art and showed an unusual talent for drawing.
Dow was also an accomplished athlete in his youth, winning numerous diving and swimming titles, and holding several national records. His life changed in 1957 when he was selected for a leading role on a new television series with little previous acting experience. For the next six years, Dow played "Wally Cleaver" on the hit show, "Leave it to Beaver."
